Kyrgios contracts COVID-19, may miss Open
Nick Kyrgios is in heavy doubt for the Australian Open after contracting COVID-19 just a week out of the season-opening major.
Kyrgios withdrew from the Sydney Tennis Classic on Monday, hours before his match against Italian firebrand Fabio Fognini.
The 26-year-old withdrew from the Melbourne summer set last week with a mysterious illness that gave rise to his asthma.
The world number 114 was cleared of COVID-19 at the time, but confirmed on Monday that he had contracted the virus.
The Australian Open begins on January 17, giving him just a week to recover and be cleared to return.
If Kyrgios does play at the Australian Open, he will do so without playing competitively since September.
Kyrgios posted on his Instagram Story, "I just want to be open and transparent with everyone, the reason I got out of Sydney is because I've tested positive for COVID."
"I am feeling well at the moment without any symptoms.
"I wish you all the best and stay safe wherever you can. If all goes well, I'll see you all at the Australian Open."
