Fans call out ‘cringe’ David Bowie cover by Zendaya, Willow Smith and Kiernan Shipka
Although they may have had the best of intentions, Zendaya, Willow Smith and Kiernan Shipka are being called in for their cover of the David Bowie classic, "Changes".
In a clip shared by W Magazine's Instagram account on Saturday, the three women were seen partly singing and partly reciting lyrics from Bowie's 1972 hit, alarming fans of the artist, who Describing his questionable knowledge of the song as insulting. Mark.
"Why are they reading these iconic songs off a page!!??? If they don't know them by heart like any Bowie fan," commented one critic, with another calling the rendition "cringeworthy."
"I hate how they're reading this," agreed another critic.
W Mag released the clip in honor of the star's 75th birthday, but it made the cover worse for hardcore fans of the legend.
"This is so outrageous on David Bowie's birthday of all days," added another disappointed follower.
Others referred to the Lynn Hirschberg-directed clip as "painful to watch", "a car accident" and even "demented".
However, there were some fans who appreciated his effort to honor Bowie, with one commenting, "Love these girls" while the other said, "Love this song for a legend!"
It also drew comparisons to Gal Gadot's viral clip of celebs covering John Lennon's "Imagine," which also received heavy criticism due to fall 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gadot recently addressed the clip, which she now revealed was in "bad taste."
"I was calling Kristen [Wig] and I was like, 'Listen, I want to do this job,'" Gadot told InStyle in the February 2022 issue of the magazine. “The pandemic was the same way [in the US] before it came here in Europe and Israel. I was watching where everything was going. But [the video] was premature."
She said, "It wasn't the right time, and it wasn't the right thing. It was in bad taste. All pure intentions, but sometimes you don't hit the saand ki aankh, right?"
Bowie died privately in 2016 after a battle with cancer.
