Buttler exits Ashes with broken finger
England's titanic attempt to draw the SCG Test has paid off, with Jos Buttler suffering a broken finger and other injuries after the Ashes series was announced.
Buttler was injured on the second day of the fourth Test after a short ball hit him on the less protected area of the glove.
The 'keeper managed to bat in both England innings, but did not take the field to keep in Australia's second innings as Ollie Root took off the gloves.
Badly out of form, Butler will return home immediately as England sweat their availability for future tours of the West Indies.
But England were grateful for his effort with the bat in the second innings, as he had used 38 balls to bowl the match down by nine wickets.
Captain Joe Root said, 'It's a very bad injury.
"It's a really frustrating shame for him and the team.
"The way he stood out throughout the game is testament to his character and how much he cares about playing for the team."
England have already called up Sam Billings in the squad, while Pope is another option to be recalled to pick up gloves for the final Test in Hobart.
Jonny Bairstow would normally be another option, although he too injured a finger in his first innings century at the SCG.
It is unclear whether he will be able to play in Hobart, after crossing 105 balls for England on Sunday.
All-rounder Ben Stokes was also unable to bowl after the second day in Sydney when he suffered a side injury.
The England star felt uncomfortable at times during his 123-ball batting attempt on the fifth day, which proved crucial as the tourists held on to save the match and eliminate any chances of whitewashing the Australian series.
