Wanderers beat Roar, claim first ALW win

Western Sydney claimed their first win of the A-League Women's season after beating Brisbane 1–0 at the Moreton Daly Stadium.

Brylyh Henry's 65th-minute penalty helped The Wanderers move up the ladder to seventh on Roar on Sunday, only the second goal by Catherine Canuly's side in the entire season.

The defeat leaves Brisbane with just one win in six games, having made a remarkable comeback against Melbourne Victory last weekend.

After a tense first half in hot and humid conditions at Radcliffe, the deadlock was broken to replace Olivia Price.

Picking up the ball to the edge of the penalty area, Price overtook some rower defenders before he was brought down by Brazilian winger Mariel Hechter.

Teenager Henry stepped up to spot kick Roar goalkeeper Georgina Worth for the 18-year-old's first goal of the 2021-22 campaign.

The Roar regretted several missed opportunities in the first half, when Katarina Gori made her 34th-minute effort thumped on the post by Sarah Langman, before the Wanderers goalkeeper dived the ball over the goal-line.

In-form Shia Connors had a good chance after a well-combined right side from Gorey and Hechter just before halftime, but the American could only fire straight at Langman when he was unmarked in the penalty area.

The Wanderers found the back of the net in the 22nd minute but Sheridan Gallagher's finish was dismissed as the forward was in offside position after a free-kick routine.

Brisbane are ranked lower than Wellington in a match the following weekend should Gareth McPherson's team just win, while the Wanderers return to Combank Stadium to host defending champions Victory in Sydney.
