Head feels Khawaja squeeze after virus
Travis Head beat COVID-19 without showing any symptoms but admits the weight of Usman Khawaja's runs could make it difficult for Hobart to regain its place in Australia's XI.
Head is feeling fine and is set to return to action for the fifth Ashes Test, spending his week in isolation while being sidelined by the virus as a mid-season break.
The South Australian returned to Australia's group during the SCG Test and spent time facing the pink ball in the nets without the effects of the virus.
Khawaja's double century at the SCG has put pressure on Australia's top order with skipper Pat Cummins conceding on Sunday that the in-form batsman should be retained.
Opener Marcus Harris is expected to be battling to retain his place this summer after failing to score a run in his maiden career century.
While Head is expected to return to No. 5 this summer after averaging 62 before contracting the virus, he admitted he was unsure about whether he would get his spot back.
"We'll wait and see," said Head.
"I think he (Khwaja) played beautifully.
"We talked about going into the series and questioned who would be on that side.
"We felt like we were in very good touch.
“We know he is versatile and the way he can play. If there was a spot open in the team, he would have grabbed that opportunity.
"He's taken it with both hands, he's been amazing.
"There are going to be some tough decisions. Those conversations haven't happened yet."
Head has been an outspoken supporter of Harris this summer, constantly touting the way his fellow left-handers pick up the ball.
The selectors have also made it clear that they want to place their faith in Harris and give him a long run, with David Warner constantly shuffling through partners throughout his career.
Khawaja, however, is one of 13 people to open with Warner, having started at an average of 95.6 in his seven innings at the top of the order.
Head said that Harris had not been showing signs of nerves since Khawaja's pile-up at the SCG, allowing him to remain an upbeat member of the sports group.
"He hasn't changed and I think that's the beauty of the whole team. We celebrate each other's success," he added.
"We're currently 3-0. We've had a great week again. He's been amazing.
"He's playing, working for Australia. He was fantastic in Melbourne, he played a huge role in us winning games.
"He would be disappointed that he didn't score runs in this game and had a good opportunity. I felt like he batted and lined up the ball well.
"He batted beautifully at the start and really set the stage as a partnership with him and Davy."
