FA Cup: Liverpool ease past Shrewsbury after early scare
Liverpool came down a goal in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday in a 4-1 win against third-tier Shrewsbury Town (select stream on ESPN+ in the US).
Liverpool midfielder Fabinho scored twice, including a first-half penalty, while Kaid Gordon and Roberto Firmino also made it to the scoresheet for the Merseyside club.
Shrewsbury's Daniel Udoh slid over Nathanael Ogbeta's cross in the 27th minute to give the visitors a close goal, but Liverpool winger Gordon equalized seven minutes later with a quiet end.
Brazil international Fabinho scored a penalty before half-time, sending off Shrewsbury keeper Marco Marosi the wrong way before Firmino added a third in the 78th minute, with a superb back-heel effort from close range.
Fabinho completed his double in the 93rd minute, tossing the ball from a tight angle into the roof of the net as Liverpool recovered from COVID-19 to win back to the touchline with manager Jurgen Klopp.
"A lot of things can happen when you score your first goal, but I like the way we responded," Klopp said.
"It was a great goal from Cade Gordon. He was really cool and calm. His main strength is his finishing.
"All credit to our academy for producing these boys but we didn't have any other line-up available.
"We had five young players. They all did well. We knew we could play better football and we did the second half."
