Biography:
2009 was a vintage year for Colin Coates. In May he captained Crusaders to a 1-0 Irish Cup Final win over Cliftonville - his first major honour - and followed that up with a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad to face Italy at the start of June.
Left footed, Coates is a central-defender who can also fill in at full-back if so required. He likes to attack, and it was his header that set up Mark Dickson's winner in the Cup Final. In January 2010 Coates claimed a Co. Antrim Shield winner's medal having twice previously finished a runner-up. Coates scored the last-minute equaliser to send the match into extra-time as Linfield were eventually defeated 3-2. The final had been postponed twice due to adverse weather and even then was only switched to Windsor Park on the day as The Oval pitch was waterlogged.
